Penalty edges Dolphin Jo towards third Melbourne Cup
Country-trained stayer Dolphin Jo edged closer to a start in his third Melbourne Cup when he was penalised half a kilo for his win in the Winning Edge Presentations Stakes (2400m) at Caulfield.
Dolphin Jo was not liable for a penalty for Saturday’s Caulfield Cup and was guaranteed a start as the winner of the Winning Edge which is an ballot exempt race.
Trained by Terry and Karina O’Sullivan at Stawell, Dolphin Jo’s penalty take his weight to 52kg in the Melbourne Cup and lifts him from 33rd to 30th in the elimination order.
The Cup field is limited to 24 starters.
In issuing today’s penalty chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said Dolphin Jo ran fifth in last year’s Melbourne Cup with 51.5kg and the penalty acknowledges his fighting win in the Winning Edge and places him in a strong position to make the Cup field again in 2008.
Dolphin Jo also contested the 2006 Melbourne Cup and finished 15th to Delta Blues.
Carpenter declined to penalise yesterday’s Cranbourne Cup (2050m) winner Majestical for the Caulfield Cup.
Majestical, who beat Barbaricus and Chantal Sally, has 50kg and is equal 32nd in the latest elimination order. Majestical is not entered for the Melbourne Cup.
Final declarations for the Caulfield Cup close at 10am tomorrow with the field to be announced around 3.30pm.
