Yosei wins Thousand Guineas
Underrated filly Yosei has won her second Group One feature in Wednesday’s $500,000 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
The Stuart Webb-trained Yosei was ridden by Michelle Payne who was also aboard the Invincible Spirit filly when she won the Group One AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in April.
The three-year-old was coming off a sixth to Secret Admirer in the Group One Flight Stakes over the Thousand Guineas distance of 1600m at Randwick earlier this month.
“She had no luck in Sydney,” Caulfield-based Webb said.
“It’s great to win a race like that at Caulfield.
“Gee she (Payne) rode her well.”
Payne allowed Yosei time to find her feet and had the filly perfectly poised to strike when midfield round the home turn.
When produced into the clear in the straight Yosei quickly reeled in the leaders and raced away to beat outsider Heartsareforlove and Brazilian Pulse.
“I loved it,” Payne said.
“She’s just a little star.”
The win was Yosei’s third in 10 starts and took her prizemoney past $560,000.
