Williams hints at Hong Kong move
Craig Williams, who has picked up the Mackinnon Stakes mount on Cox Plate winner So You Think, has not ruled out a return to Hong Kong following his split with the powerful David Hayes stable.
The four-time Melbourne premiership winner made a hit-and-run visit to ride at Sha Tin on Sunday and came away with wins aboard the John Size-trained pair of Appreciation and Unique Jewellery.
He returns to Australia this week and will be aboard the Bart Cummings-trained So You Think in the Group One Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, taking over from Glen Boss who was suspended for his winning ride aboard the colt in the Cox Plate.
While Williams’ focus is firmly on the Melbourne spring carnival, he says a more permanent return to Hong Kong has appeal.
"I’m in the middle of the Melbourne Cup carnival right now and have been lucky enough to pick up the ride on the Cox Plate winner, So You Think, in a Group One next Saturday there," Williams told the South China Morning Post.
"There has been good demand from other stables when it became public that David and I had parted, so I’m still very busy for this carnival and through to the big two and three-year-old racing early next year, but who knows then?
"I’ve always loved racing here (Hong Kong) and coming back is definitely one of the options.
"Days like this one don’t hurt as far as reminding everyone I’m around."
The well-travelled Williams spent time riding in Hong Kong before returning to Australia four years ago, at the same time as Hayes, and becoming the high-profile trainer’s stable rider.
The pair enjoyed good success with Miss Finland’s 2006 Golden Slipper victory among the highlights.
However, earlier this month Hayes sacked Williams who is now riding freelance in Melbourne.
