Pfieffer covers bases with Gai's Choice
In-form mare Gai’s Choice will be entered for races in two states as a precaution against a rain-affected track hampering her bid for a maiden stakes win.
Trainer David Pfieffer confirmed Gai’s Choice would be nominated for the Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich on Saturday but said he would also lodge a Rosehill nomination as an insurance entry.
“She has won in the wet but I wouldn’t like to be going all the way to Queensland to race on a heavy track,” Pfieffer said.
“Her record says she has won on a heavy track at the Gold Coast but it was closer to a slow rating that day.”
“I’ll put her in at Rosehill as well just to be on the safe side and I’ll probably accept in both places.”
Pfieffer said the $100,000 Gai Waterhouse Classic was a preferred weekend target because of its Listed status.
“It’s the right race at the right distance and winning it makes her a valuable mare,” he said.
Jay Ford has been booked for the Gai Waterhouse Classic ride while Peter Robl will take the mount if she races at Rosehill.
Gai’s Choice will be chasing a hat-trick after two impressive wins since her return to Pfieffer’s Warwick Farm stables after a stint with Brett Partelle.
She held off Recorrido over 1100m at Rosehill on May 12 before posting a six-length winning margin at the track a fortnight later.
“She’s won six races and three hundred thousand dollars and there’s not too many mares who can do that without winning a stakes race,” Pfieffer said.
“She deserves some black type for her owners.”
