Palacio to have a Group I crack
Randwick trainer Grahame Begg has decided to bypass Saturday’s Emancipation Stakes in favour of a start at Group I level for his talented mare Palacio De Cristal.
Following discussions with the mare’s owner Gerry Harvey, Begg will accept to start the daughter of Encosta De Lago in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes over 2000m.
“We don’t think it’s a vintage Queen Elizabeth,” Begg said.
“There are a few horses there that don’t appear to have targeted the race.”
Palacio De Cristal was scratched from last Saturday’s Doncaster mile due to the rain affected track and it the heavens happen to open again she would be likely to spend this Saturday at home in her box.
A proven Randwick miler, Palacio De Cristal is yet to win over 2000 metres but Begg said she’s had excuses at her two attempts.
“One was on a pretty wet track and last year we threw her into this after having a tough run in the Doncaster,” he said.
“She seems to be going better this time round.
“She’d have probably started favourite in the Emancipation but it’s the Group One we really want so we’ll have a throw at the stumps.
“It all depends on the skies.”
