Nirvana to rock out in Perth
A Fred Kersley-trained track specialist is perfectly placed to win Western Australia’s Group III Hyperion Stakes (1600m) at Belmont Park on Saturday.
Five-year-old Grand Nirvana has raced nine times at Belmont for seven wins and goes into the weight-for-age race with two wins from as many starts this preparation.
Grand Nirvana carried topweight of 60kg last start when narrowly accounting for King Kool Kat and Battle Emblem in the Group III Belmont Stakes (1400m) on June 11.
But under the weight-for-age conditions of the Hyperion Stakes, Grand Nirvana will meet those gallopers on better terms, 2kg and 6kg respectively.
Grand Nirvana has won only one race beyond 1400 metres, when he took out the Belmont Guineas (1600m) at the corresponding meeting two years ago, however he has demonstrated his ability to run a strong mile with consecutive fourth placings in the Group I Railway stakes in the past two years.
The danger to Grand Nirvana looks to be the Darren McAuliffe-trained Impressive Jeuney.
The WA Oaks winner was unsuited first up over 1200 metres but steps up to the mile on Saturday and has the speed to be prominent throughout.
Grand Nirvana is a $2.35 chance with Centrebet while Impressive Jeuney represents value at $10.
