Money comes for Starspangledbanner
Caulfield Guineas winner Starspangledbanner has been backed into favouritism for Saturday’s Group One Lightning Stakes at Flemington, displacing Queenslander Burdekin Blues at the head of the market.
Burdekin Blues opened favourite at $4.60 with TAB Sportsbet but strong support for the Leon Corstens-trained sprinter has resulted in Starspangledbanner tightening from $5 to $4.20 favourite for the 1000m dash.
The colt is scheduled to race in Michael Tabor’s blue and orange colours with a deal between the current owners and racing giant Coolmore nearing completion.
Burdekin Blues remained at $4.60 on Thursday afternoon ahead of the David Hayes-trained pair of Nicconi ($6) and Irish Lights ($7.50).
Peter Moody’s filly Headway is next at $9, while Shellscrape is in to $10 from his opening quote of $11.
Three-year-old Extra Zero is expected to run well first-up in the Group Three CS Hayes Stakes, with the colt being backed in from $6.50 to $3.40.
The Anthony Cummings-trained Tallow has firmed from $5.50 to $4.80 favourite for The Vanity and the Moody-trained Salinas has also had support from $9.50 to $7.50.
Starspangledbanner’s stablemate Tricky Tricky, who was recently backed in from $81 to $14 for the Blue Diamond Stakes, heads the market for Saturday’s Talindert Stakes at $2.90 on the back of his eight length barrier trial victory on Monday at Cranbourne.
