McGill suspended for 10 weeks
Jockey Logan McGill will sit out the rest of the spring after being hit with a 10-week for suspension relating to a ride at Moonee Valley last week.
On Monday, Racing Victoria stewards concluded their inquiry into McGill’s handling of Akihito on Friday night and found that he failed to give it every possible chance when sixth in the Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge (955m) at Moonee Valley.
Further evidence was taken from trainer Grant Craven, and jockey Chris Symons and Victorian Jockey Association chief Des O’Keefe represented McGill.
Stewards found that from the 400 metres to the 200 metres McGill failed to make sufficient effort to improve his position behind the eventual winner Tully Dreamer.
They also found that having obtained a run to the inside of Tully Dreamer near the 50 metres, McGill failed to ride Akihito out to the winning post.
Stewards took into account McGill’s personal circumstances and his recent riding record before suspending from midnight on Monday to midnight on December 13.
