Mafia Miss misses out

Gimcrack Stakes hopeful Mafia Miss has pleased trainer Grahame Begg ahead of her assignment at Randwick on Saturday when he believes she can overcome a nightmare barrier and be hitting the line strongly in the Listed race.

The filly has drawn the outside barrier, 15, for the 1000-metre race.
TAB Sportsbet has just four horses at single-figure odds for the Gimcrack in a market headed by Champagne Dynamite ($2.60) followed by Actrice ($3.80), Capital Raising ($6) and Cosmo Gal ($8.50) while Mafia Miss is rated a $15 chance.
"She’s a nice progressive filly," Begg said.
"She’s not a speed horse but one thing I know is that she will be hitting the line hard.
"It’s a tricky draw but she’s got a very good jockey (Nash Rawiller) and conditions might change here again, we could have those strong winds back and it could be wet. She’ll be competitive."
Mafia Miss, who is by Mossman and cost $50,000 as a yearling, was third to Champagne Dynamite in an 800-metre barrier trial at Randwick on September 21.
Champagne Dynamite won the trial by 4-1/2 lengths from $10 Gimcrack chance Posh Chic with Mafia Miss a short neck away.
"She’s got good ability and has made nice improvement since the trial," Begg said.
"She’s got a staying pedigree being out of a Sunday Silence mare but in saying that she’s a very genuine filly.
"She won’t be the worst one in the race that’s for sure."
