Kirklees new Caulfield Cup favourite
The Godolphin-owned Kirklees is the new favourite for Saturday’s $2.5 million Caulfield Cup after drawing ideally in barrier seven.
The barrier draw caused a betting reshuffle after early equal favourites Predatory Pricer and Vigor drew horribly in 16 and 22 respectively in the 18-horse field plus four emergencies.
Kirklees firmed from $10 to $8 with TAB Sportsbet after Wednesday’s draw for the 2400m feature which promises to be one of the most open in memory.
Predatory Pricer drifted from $7 to $8.50, while Vigor eased from $7 to $10.
A good draw in the Caulfield Cup is considered vital as only four horses have won the race from outside gate 11 in the past 22 years.
Damien Oliver’s mount Cima De Triomphe, prepared by Luca Cumani, is at $8.50 after drawing barrier 11 while New Zealand mare Daffodil firmed from $11 to $9 after drawing four.
Two of Bart Cummings’ trio fared well with Roman Emperor and Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder drawing alongside each other in barriers five and six, while reigning Melbourne Cup winner Viewed drew out in 15.
Others to draw well were New Zealander Harris Tweed in two and the Anthony Cummings-trained trio of Red Lord in three, Zavite in eight and fourth emergency Miss Darcey in nine.
Kirklees will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy who won last year’s Cup on Godolphin’s All The Good.
