Gilded Venom topweight for Perth Cup

Local star Gilded Venom is topweight for the Group Two Perth Cup on New Year’s Day with 58.5kg, three kilos more than Victorian Annenkov.

GildedVenom Gilded Venom beat Sniper’s Bullet and Annenkov to claim Perth racing’s richest prize, the $1 million Group One Railway Stakes.

He finished second to Niconero in Saturday’s Group One Kingston Town Classic (1800m) with Sniper’s Bullet third and Annenkov fourth.

The 2009 Perth Cup has been reduced to 2400 metres from 3200 metres with Niconero’s stablemate The Fuzz to carry 55kg.

He has won over the distance in the 2007 Geelong Cup and trainer David Hayes is confident he can bounce back from his failure in the Kingston Town when he finished almost 30 lengths from the winner.

While Sniper’s Bullet and Niconero will return to the east, the Peter Moody-trained Annenkov is among the entries for the Cup and the traditional lead-up, the weight-for-age C B Cox Stakes (2100m) on December 17.

The Hayes-trained El Daana has been entered for both races and has been given 52kg for the Cup.

The mare finished 10th in the Kingston Town.
