Enigma favourite again

1Bookmakers are rubbing their hands together after one of Sydney’s most enigmatic gallopers has again been installed as a favourite at Kensington on Wednesday.

Breeze Up has crucified punters of late, defeated as a heavily backed favourite at his last two starts.

Two runs back, Breeze Up was subject of one of the biggest goes in the last month on Sydney tracks when backed as if unbeatable at Warwick Farm on Australia Day, firming from $2.40 to $1.45 in official fluctuations, having opened better than $3.00 in early fixed-odds markets.

On that occasion, Breeze Up was one of the first horses beaten turning for home and finished towards the tail of the field.

At his most recent start, Breeze Up firmed from $4.40 into $3.30 and looked like he may atone for much of the straight, but battled to find the necessary intestinal fortitude when it mattered on the line and was beaten a nose by a short-head into third.

Overall, Breeze Up has had 15 career starts for just the one win and has started the popular elect in five of his defeats and well in the market for most of his others.

Regardless, TAB Sportsbet have installed him as a $3.60 favourite for the Centennial Park Benchmark 70 Handicap (1550m) at Kensington on Wednesday.

“He’s paid for a lot of lunches in here,” Glenn Munsie from TAB Sportsbet said.

“Horses that are reported to have ability are often put up short with supporters continuing to jump on as they wait for them to fulfil their ability.

“We are due for another good lunch so hopefully he will supply it again.”

James Cummings, from the Bart Cummings stable, has his fingers crossed that punters might be the group getting the lunches out of Breeze Up on Wednesday.

“I suppose the positive from his last run is that even though he should have found the line better, at least he came back into some form; hopefully it is a step towards another win,” he said.

“He is rock hard fit so getting up to the 1550m and being positively ridden might get him across the line on Wednesday.”

Corey Brown has been booked for the ride.
