Douro Valley flops in Vase

Australian competitor Douro Valley has finished out of the placings in the Hong Kong Vase won for the second year in a row by French horse Doctor Dino.

Douro Vally wins Race 5, the Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday 11 October 2008, ridden by Jamie Winks trained by Danny O'Brien. Photo by Bronwen Healy Ridden by Darren Beadman, Douro Valley finished ninth after being up on the pace early but had no answer when the swoopers came in the straight.

Purple Moon hit the front but the 2007 Melbourne Cup runner-up was claimed on the post by Doctor Dino.

It was another frustrating close second for English trainer Luca Cumani after Bauer’s nose defeat in this year’s Melbourne Cup won by Viewed.

Douro Valley’s trainer Danny O’Brien said the slow pace of the race did not suit.

"He’s just not a horse who can sprint off a slow tempo," O’Brien said.

"It’s not the perfect way to ride the horse but if you’re a bit one dimensional you get found out."
