Black Caviar faces moment of truth

Unbeaten mare Black Caviar faces her moment of truth when the much-anticipated clash with star sprinter Hay List takes place in Saturday’s Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington.

The Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) is shaping as one of the real highlights of the spring and trainer Peter Moody says it is Black Caviar’s chance to win at the highest level.

“She’s super, no excuses, she’s in great shape,” he said.

“She’s in good form, everything’s gone fine, she’s very well and this is her chance to win a Group One.

“She’s two for two down the straight.

“You know she’s meeting a group of outstanding horses, not just one, and she has to step up.

“She’s looked the part and now she’s got to do it.”

Moody said Black Caviar did a little bit of pacework on Thursday morning to top her off for her first Group One assignment in the weight-for-age feature.

Seven horses have accepted including Group One winners Hay List, All Silent, Melito, Ortensia and Star Witness.

Only Group One-placed and Group Two winner Eagle Falls and Black Caviar are yet to win a Group One.

“It’s a bit of a worry isn’t it,” Moody said tongue in cheek.

Yet to taste defeat in seven starts, Black Caviar has been brilliant this spring winning the Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield and the Schweppes Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley, the latter by 5-1/2 lengths from Hot Danish.

Moody said Black Caviar would have a break after the Patinack Farm and get ready for the Group One Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington in the late summer.

“We’ve got to get those Group Ones,” he said.

Trainer Tony Noonan is happy with Ortensia who is resuming and went well in a jumpout at Flemington last Tuesday week.

“She’s good but I’d rather the other two (Black Caviar and Hay List) were away at Moe or somewhere but they’re there and we have to do our best,” he said.

“They will go fast and the hope is that we can have the last crack at them.

“That’s our best hope.

“The mare is really well but it will be tough.”

Black Caviar is $1.80 favourite with TAB Sportsbet with Manikato Stakes winner Hay List at $2.90, Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Star Witness at $9 with The Galaxy winner Ortensia next at $14.
