Back to business for Prebble
After a whirlwind day and night, Melbourne Cup winning jockey Brett Prebble heads back for business as usual in Hong Kong on Thursday.
The usually strict Hong Kong racing authorities allowed Prebble to miss Wednesday night’s meeting at Happy Valley to stay in town to soak in his Cup win on Green Moon at Flemington on Tuesday.
As he has on many occasions before, the Hong Kong-based Victorian would have normally flown straight back on Tuesday night in time for the Wednesday meeting.
“I was more than happy to go back and fulfil my engagements but I was keen to enjoy the moment and take it all in and they said they were happy to let others pick up my rides and let me stay,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
“I’ll be flying back first thing in the morning and be back in Hong Kong at four o’clock tomorrow. It’s still short, but it’s sweet.”
Prebble will have nine rides on Saturday at Sha Tin and while he’s had great support from the Hong Kong locals who have embraced the Cup win as one for them, he doesn’t expect any special treatment on the weekend.
“Their memories are very short there, you’re as good as your last winner,” he said.
He said he celebrated his victory on Tuesday night but did not get carried away.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I was in bed by 12, the media was at my door at 6.30, so I had a little bit of sleep there,” he said.
Having spent the past 10 years in Hong Kong, Prebble says he’s there for the long haul, but would like to come back home to ride Green Moon in next year’s Australian Cup or Cox Plate.
