Apprentice involved in Hawkesbury fall

Lightweight apprentice Chad Schofield has broken his arm in five places in a race fall at a Sydney provincial meeting on Thursday.

The 16-year-old fell from Adamant soon after the field straightened in the first race at Hawkesbury and was taken to Westmead Hospital.

Schofield remained conscious and will have surgery to mend fractures to his elbow and wrist.

His father, top Sydney jockey Glyn Schofield, witnessed the fall.

“His arm is pretty messed up,” Schofield said.

“It was a bit of a shock (to see him fall) to say the least.”

Chad, who tips the scales at just 39kg, had his first race rides at Newcastle in July.

He rode his first winner during the two-day Newcastle Gold Cup carnival on September 15.
