Alcopop draws poorly for Caulfield Cup

Joint favourite Alcopop has suffered a setback at Wednesday’s Caulfield Cup barrier draw, coming up with the outside gate in the field of 18 plus four emergencies.

Connections were able to pick their own barriers once their horse’s name was drawn and the Jake Stephens-trained Alcopop, an impressive second to superstar So You Think in last week’s Yalumba Stakes, was the last of the 22 out of the barrel.

The second reserve Red Ruler came up with the inside gate.

Bart Cummings, chasing his eighth Caulfield Cup and second in succession after Viewed’s win last year, has his stablemates Faint Perfume and Dariana drawn alongside each other in seven and eight respectively.

The well-fancied pair of Metal Bender (gate two) and Herculian Prince (six) are likely to firm in the betting for Saturday’s $2.5 million Group One 2400m feature after their favourable draws.
