Alcopop begins journey to Sydney
Star South Australian stayer Alcopop will leave for NSW early on Friday morning to ramp up his preparations for the Sydney autumn carnival.
Alcopop captured the imagination of the racing public last preparation when he rose from obscurity to win the Listed Balaklava Cup (1600m), Listed JRA Cup (2040m) and Group Two Herbert Power (2400m) in consecutive starts before finishing sixth as favourite in the Melbourne Cup.
Trainer Jake Stephens plans to give Alcopop his first Sydney start in the Group Two Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 20.
From there he is likely to contest three Group One weight-for-age races starting with the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), then the Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and The BMW (2400m).
Stephens also has the five-year-old nominated for the Doncaster.
“It will be interesting,” Stephens said.
“There will be a lot of unknowns with him going the other way and with the weather and things like that, hopefully he will relish it all. He is looking super in the coat.”
Stephens said Dominic Tourneur would ride Alcopop when he resumed in the Apollo Stakes.
