Railway invasion by Eastern states horses
One of the most potent interstate assaults on a West Australian feature race was confirmed on Monday with eight visiting horses accepting for the Railway Stakes.
Six Victorian-trained gallopers and two from NSW will line up in the $1 million race at Ascot on Saturday.
Perth star Marasco heads the weights with 57.5kg, a half kilogram ahead of the 2006 placegetter Niconero.
Niconero is one of two runners for trainer David Hayes with The Fuzz (52.5kg) also among acceptors.
Marasco’s trainer Fred Kersley will also be represented with Grand Nirvana, who as the only three-year-old in the field, will carry the limit weight.
Sydney jockey Glen Boss’ confirmed booking for Melbourne galloper Pillar Of Hercules gives the race added interest with three of the last four Melbourne Cup-winning riders sporting silks.
This year’s winning jockey Blake Shinn takes the ride on the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bank Robber while 2007 winner Michael Rodd will partner Sniper’s Bullet.
Pillar Of Hercules finished third at his Perth debut on Saturday and trainer Peter Moody will put blinkers on the four-year-old for the Railway.
Boss has also picked up the mount on promising three-year-old Harkam Grace in a support race.
