Overview
The handsome son of Iglesia was one of the most appealing first season stallions at stud in 2007, and followed this up in 2008. His oldest progeny are now weanlings, with some impressively athletic types being produced.
Aside from his classical proportions and scopey athleticism, Written Tycoon was a well performed racehorse who rated very highly in his juvenile career.
- WRITTEN TYCOON took the prize of Champion QTIS Two-Year-old in 2005 on the strength of his win in the Group 2 Todman Stakes at Rosehill in the lead up to the Golden Slipper.
- WRITTEN TYCOON had a Timeform rating of 121 as a two-year old, and was amongst the cream of Australia’s 2002 crop (121 is the same ranking that was given to Bel Esprit when he was rated the best two year old to race in the 2001-2002 season in front of horses like CHOISIR and PLANCHET.)
- WRITTEN TYCOON’S lineage is laden with quality, including the likes of ANTHEMS, VOCALIST and multiple Group 1 winner YELL. The horse has the proven influences of Marscay and Vain close up in his pedigree and looks likely to become an invaluable source of early maturing speed.
Career Performance
WRITTEN TYCOON. 11 Starts. 2-3-0 $289,325.
Won Rosehill Todman S. [G2] (1200 m.), Randwick 2 YO H. (1100 m.). 2d Randwick San Domenico S. [G3] , Canterbury Satellite S. [L] , Randwick 2 YO H.
WRITTEN TYCOON commenced his race career with an easy win at Randwick as a pronounced 7/4 favourite.
Two weeks later, he was narrowly beaten by champion filly FASHIONS AFIELD at Randwick when beating home million dollar Crown Lodge horse MANTON. Fashions Afield would later frank the form in claiming the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes and Group 2 Reisling Slipper Stakes, and finish runner up to STRATUM in the $3 Million Dollar Golden Slipper Stakes.
Written Tycoon then recorded his career highlight winning the Group 2 Todman Slipper Stakes at Rosehill, overcoming a chequered passage to comfortably account for highly regarded colts DOMESDAY and FLYING PEGASUS.
Sent for a spell, Written Tycoon made his racetrack return in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Randwick along with fellow glamour 3yo’s STRATUM, MEDIA and SNITZEL. Settling at the tale of the field Written Tycoon unleashed a powerful burst in the straight to nab all bar Bob Thompson’s classy filly Media.
He was then sent to Melbourne to run in the time honoured Ascot Vale Stakes. In typical Melbourne fashion, the wet weather set in for the week prior and Flemington presented a dead track to race upon, and the colt had a nightmare run.
“Written Tycoon was uncomfortable during the race, after the interference he was shying at the running rail”, jockey Danny Nikolic reported after the race. “He was bumped at least five times; just forget that he ever went around”.
On February 2 Written Tycoon resumed in the Listed Canterbury Classic under the expert guidance of John O’Shea, where he finished second behind classy mare CRIMSON REIGN. The running of the race did not suit Written Tycoon at all, and John was very pleased with the colts’ efforts to place where he did.
The colt then travelled down to Melbourne for the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate on February 25, but injured himself in trackwork a few days earlier.
Top jockey Glen Boss thought very highly of Written Tycoon, and was naturally disappointed when the colt was forced out of the Oakleigh.
“After winning a barrier trial on Written Tycoon last month, I came away thinking I’d found my next outstanding racehorse. Everything he has done since only served to convince me further he was the “real deal”, so imagine my disappointment when I learned the colt was out of the Oakleigh Plate” said Boss.
Conformation
As Sheriff Iskander, Managing Director of Iskander Racing has noted “When I laid eyes on him I thought he was the most outstanding individual I’ve ever seen, you have to see him in the flesh to appreciate how good he is”, said Iskander. “You would book a mare to him after seeing him, such is his presence and class”.
Written Tycoon possesses a scopey athleticism that will no doubt add height, quality and refinement to his offspring.

Additional Pedigree Notes
WRITTEN TYCOON’s is consistently proving their phenomenal capacity on the racetrack.
In June 2008 a full brother to Written Tycoon was making waves in the Lloyd Williams stable; Strumming, a 2yr old colt by Iglesia from Party Miss blinded the opposition to win on debut at Mooney Valley. Despite showing greenness in running and being slow out of the gates, Strumming opened up in the straight to win by more than 4 lengths going away from the pack.
Williams was quick to agree with jockey Michael Rodd that the speedy colt has a very promising future, and was a well calculated purchase.
Foal Crop

Written Tycoon stood his first season at Eliza Park in 2007, receiving over 120 mares despite the devastating effects of travel restrictions imposed by the Equine Influenza outbreak.
Written Tycoon’s impressive first foals arrived in 2008 and have developed into lovely weanlings. We eagerly await his second crop that is due in 2009.
