Waller veteran to be aimed high

Waller veteran to be aimed highPopular veteran Rangirangdoo could be given the chance to compete over 2400 metres this spring with the eight-year-old among Chris Waller’s entries for the Metropolitan.

Waller will also nominate him for the Epsom Handicap over 1600 metres with entries for both the Randwick features on October 6 closing on Monday.

Plagued with injuries throughout his career, Rangirangdoo has continually raced at the highest level, being rewarded with victories in the 2010 Doncaster Mile and the 2011 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

He missed winning a Group One earlier this year by a half head when second to Manighar in the Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

“I think this spring might be the time to try him over the longer trip,” Waller said.

“He will be nominated for both the Epsom and the Metropolitan.

Stablemate and last year’s Metropolitan winner The Verminator will also be entered along with Saturday’s Warwick Farm winner Kelinni.

“Kelinni reminds me of a horse like The Verminator,” Waller said.

“But whether he is ready for a race like the Metropolitan remains to be seen.” Doncaster.

Another stable veteran Danleigh, third in Saturday’s Warwick Stakes, will be among Waller’s Epsom entries as will Shoot Out.

Rangirangdoo and Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out ran third and sixth respectively in a Rosehill barrier trial last week while stable newcomer Class Is Class was third on the same day in a heat won by Group One winner Sincero.

“Class Is Class will also be entered for the Metropolitan and is a nice horse,” Waller said.

A three-time stakes winner in England, Class Is Class is one of many imports in the Waller stable and is owned by Richard Pegum.

He is also entered for the Caulfield Cup and the Cox Plate.

Having secured his second Sydney trainers’ premiership at the end of last month, Waller has stolen a march on his rivals early in the new season with a treble at Warwick Farm on Saturday moving him to 18, 11 clear of Gai Waterhouse and 12 ahead of Peter Snowden.
