Makybe Diva's first foal breaks through
Makybe Diva’s first foal Rockstardom has broken through for his first win at his eighth race start in a Bendigo maiden.
The Galileo four-year-old, who was a $1.5 million yearling purchase, was resuming in the 1600m event and had been gelded since his previous outing when last in the VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington in April.
Trained by Danny O’Brien and ridden on Thursday by Mark Zahra, Rockstardom ($3.50) edged out Daley ($2.25 fav) to score by a nose with Mantras ($5) 4-1/4 lengths back third in the small field of five.
“Like Danny (O’Brien) said he’s probably going to be better over a trip,” Zahra told TVN.
“I wasn’t worried when a couple went around me.
“I just let them go and, luckily for me, he hit the front and just pulled up.
“First up at a mile he hasn’t done a bad job after being held up at the top of the straight, to pick up off that and come home and win.
“The further the better for him.”
Triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva has four progeny including La Dolce Diva, a three-year-old filly by Fusaichi Pegasus with Mark Kavanagh, a two-year-old Encosta De Lago colt and a Lonhro colt foal.
