Boost for Gosford Guineas
The Gosford Guineas has received a prizemoney boost to $150,000 with hopes it can gain Group race status in the coming years.
Currently a Listed event, the black-type race for three-year-olds was reduced from 1600 metres to 1200 metres last year when won by the Peter Snowden-trained Aichi and worth around $125,000.
The Gosford Race Club hopes the feature can develop into one of the major sprint races for three-year-olds during the autumn carnival.
"The Gosford Race Club views the Gosford 3YO Guineas as becoming the premier three-year-old sprint during the Sydney autumn carnival and we will aim to have its black-type standing increased from a Listed event to Group status within four years," Gosford chief executive James Heddo said.
"It is ideally positioned during the Sydney autumn carnival and the set weights and penalties format will ensure a competitive race."
The Gosford Guineas, which boasts 2004 winner Desert War among its honour roll, will be run on April 10
