Arnold prepared to lead on So You Think
Steven Arnold says if nothing else wants to lead in Saturday’s Yalumba Stakes at Caulfield he will take up the running on odds-on favourite So You Think.
The Group One weight-for-age feature attracted only six acceptors on Wednesday and looks a virtual match-race between Cox Plate favourite So You Think and equal second pick Whobegotyou.
“Red Ruler might roll along but if he wants to walk I’ll go to the front,” Arnold said.
“It wouldn’t worry me if he had to lead.”
So You Think led all the way to win last year’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and again led, much to trainer Bart Cummings’ annoyance, when runner-up to All American in the Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
The High Chaparral four-year-old entire has raced handy in his two starts for two wins this campaign in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and the Underwood Stakes (1800m), both at Caulfield.
“He pulled a bit the other day. He was second-up and he had had three weeks between runs and was just a little bit cranky on the day,” Arnold said.
“I wanted to ride him with cover. He got to the right spot but he didn’t relax through the first three furlongs (600m).
“But down by the 1000 metres he relaxed but I’d like to see him relax a little bit better.
“He’s a big horse and when they are a little bit fresh they can get a bit cranky. He got a bit stirred up in the gates and kicked out a couple of times.”
Arnold has plenty of respect for Whobegotyou who has won at Group One level on the corresponding day for the past two years, in the 2008 Caulfield Guineas and last year’s Yalumba.
“I don’t take Whobegotyou lightly. I’d say he’s probably got the best turn of foot,” he said.
“Whobegotyou has got a real sharp turn of foot and is a great horse. My bloke seems to be pretty strong in his races all the time.
“So we’ll have to assess it through the first half and see how the tempo has been.
“You can over-analyse it. As long as he can be where he’s comfortable, if he’s good enough he’ll win.”
So You Think is at $1.50 with TAB Sportsbet ahead of Whobegotyou, the last-start Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner for the second year in succession, at $2.90.
Empires Choice, third to More Joyous in the George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick when second-up from a 15-month layoff, is next at $11 with last year’s Herbert Power Stakes winner Alcopop at $18 and Wellington Cup winner Red Ruler at $61.
Master O’Reilly, whose last win was in the 2007 Caulfield Cup and who ran fourth in last year’s Yalumba, is the outsider at $101.00.
