AJC members behind the merger

745138-ron-finemoreThe Australian Jockey Club members voted for a proposed merger of the AJC and the Sydney Turf Club, by an overwhelming majority.

More than 1,100 AJC members registered their votes on the merger with 85.46 percent saying yes to a Sydney super club.

AJC Chairman Ron Finemore AO said that the result was a strong endorsement of the AJC Board’s decision to unanimously support the merger proposal, which will include a $150 million grant to help fund improvements to Royal Randwick.

“I am pleased to note that the membership of the Club has recognized the future benefits of this merger for Members and Sydney racing,” Finemore said.

“I am pleased that tonight the membership has voted to embrace the changes needed for the AJC, Sydney Racing and New South Wales to be a leader in Australian thoroughbred racing.

“The total investment of $174 million which the AJC and STC will receive will put Sydney racing where it belongs – front and centre on the world stage.”

The STC members will vote on Monday whether to support or oppose the merger of the two Sydney race clubs.
